SUMMARY STATEMENT:
Council Member Kulesza has announced his intention to resign from the City Council, effective October 1,
2010.
Idaho Code § 50-704 provides the authority for filling a vacancy on the Council.
50-704. VACANCIES -- APPOINTMENT. A vacancy on the council shall be filled by appointment
made by the mayor with the consent of the council, which appointee shall serve only until the next
general city election, at which such vacancy shall be filled for the balance of the original term.
The next general city election will be held on November 8, 2011. Council Member Kulesza's term would
have expired on December 31, 2011.
In similar situations in the past, the Council has advertised for interested candidates, reviewed their resumes
and letters of interest, and conducted interviews in public session. An advertisement could be placed in the
September 16 Star News and interviews conducted as early as the regular Council meeting on September
23. Alternatively, the interviews could be scheduled for the regular Council meeting on October 7.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Provide direction regarding the selection process to be used to fill the Council vacancy.
