SUMMARY STATEMENT:
The current Local Option Tax ordinance expires December 31, 2011. At the February 10, 2011 City
Council Meeting , the City Council directed staff to provide information on the proposed local option tax
rates of 4% on lodging, 2% on liquor by the drink and prepared food, and 2% on rental vehicles (including
cars, snowmobiles and golf carts).
The purpose of the meeting on March 10 is to hear public input about the renewal of the local option tax,
and to provide direction to staff about the structure of any new local option tax ordinance. Based on that
direction, staff will prepare an ordinance for the Council to consider at the March 24 meeting. Additional
public comment will be solicited on March 24, as well.
Attached is a memo that identifies a number of issues that the Council may wish to consider. Staff
requests direction on each of the 12 questions, in order to develop an ordinance for further consideration.
Also attached is Resolution 04-13, which includes the original LOT Ordinance 796.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Direct staff to prepare an ordinance or multiple ordinances and a resolution stating the Ballot Proposition
for the March 24, 2011 City Council Meeting.
