Balance Exercises (Mayo Clinic Newsletter, 2018) Balance exercises can help you maintain stability at any age. Balance exercises can help with preventing falls. Nearly any activity that keeps you on your feet and moving can help you maintain good balance. But specific exercises designed to enhance your balance are beneficial to include in your daily routine and can help you improve your stability. If you have severe balance problems or an orthopedic condition, get your doctor’s approval before doing these exercises: Weight Shifts ●Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your weight equally distributed on both legs. ●Shift your weight to your right side, and then lift your left foot off the floor. ●Hold the position as long as you can maintain good form, up to 30 seconds. Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side. As your balance improves, increase the number of repetitions. Single-leg Balance ●Stand with feet hip-width apart and your weight equally distributed on both legs. Place your hands on your hips. Lift your left leg off the floor and bend it back at the knee. ●Hold the position as long as you can maintain good form, up to 30 seconds. ●Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side. As your balance improves, increase the number of repetitions. Another exercise that can help with balance and reduce your risks of falls is Tai Chi. Look for group classes offered at local fitness centers. The Brewster COA offers a few excellent exercise options. Turn back to page 4 to see them all! BE WELL! LIVE STRONG! LIVE LONG! Charlie Altieri, RN, Public Health Nurse June 2018 Page 11 Brewster, MA Sightings from the Poop Deck “Hands down, the two most dangerous words in the English language today are ‘studies show.’ Andy Kessler - Wall Street Journal, August 14, 2017 It seems lately I have begun to notice how often the words “studies show” is mentioned in almost every newscast I happen to be watching. For example, if someone is attempting to prove a point in a debate, all the person has to do is to state that “studies show” and the argument is, for all intents and purposes, won. The person making the point is never asked, “What study?” Are we so easily duped that studies show that all you have to say is “studies show” and we will believe anything? Here are a few far-fetched examples, but if you were not reading them here would you be convinced that they are all research driven and true? ●Scientific “studies show’ that people who write on their foreheads with a Sharpie do not have a job to go to in the morning. ●According to recent studies, 4 out of 5 stoners agree that a friend in need is a friend indeed. The fifth stoner is the one with the weed. ●Studies show that 4 out of 5 doctors believe drinking alcohol regularly isn’t a big deal. The fifth doctor is a flippin’ loser. ●When you asked your wife 1,238 times what she wanted at the drive thru, studies show that she will eat your fries on the way home. ●Studies show few women admit their age. Reports say few men act theirs. ●Studies show that wearing glasses makes you look 70% smarter than you actually are. ●Studies show that the human body is approximately 60% water. The good news is, you’re not fat...you’re flooded. ●Studies show that cows produce more milk when listening to relaxing music. ●Studies show that people who use swear words have superior #$%&@ intelligence. So, for whatever it’s worth, WSJ writes: “Studies Are Usually Bunk, Study Shows.” Peter R. Scheffer (“Life is Good!”) - Now that’s a fact!! P.S.
