HomeMy Public PortalAboutStaff Report - Appointment to City Commissions Parks and Recreation - unexpired term 2017-06-30 MANAGEMENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM DATE: May 17, 2016 TO: The Honorable City Council FROM: Mayor Pro Tem Sternquist Councilmember Man SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSED RESOLUTION NO. 16-5170 CONFIRMING APPOINTMENT TO THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION: The City Council is requested to: a) Adopt proposed Resolution No. 16-5170 confirming appointment of one applicant to the Parks and Recreation Commission for an unexpired term ending June 30, 2017; and b) Request the City Clerk to administer the Oath of Office to the new Commissioner. BACKGROUND: 1. On May 9, 2016, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Steve Wen resigned his position on the Parks and Recreation Commission. 2. On May 10, 2016, the City Commissioner Recruitment Ad Hoc Committee (i.e. Mayor Pro Tem Sternquist and Councilmember Man) reviewed applications the City received for the recruitment of City Commissioner seats expiring on June 30, 2016. 3. On May 11, 2016, the City Commissioner Recruitment Ad Hoc Committee directed staff to prepare a report for City Council’s consideration, an appointment to fill the Parks and Recreation Commissioner vacancy (i.e., unexpired term of June 30, 2017) created by the resignation of Commissioner Wen. City Council May 17, 2016 Page 2 of 2 ANALYSIS : In light of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Wen’s resignation on May 9, 2016, the City Commissioner Recruitment Ad Hoc Committee reviewed applications the City received for the recruitment of City Commissioner seats expiring on June 30, 2016, with a goal of appointing a new commissioner as soon as possible. The appointee to the Parks and Recreation Commission will fill an unexpired term of office ending June 30, 2017. The City Commissioner Recruitment Ad Hoc Committee has recommended the appointment of Cynthia Vance to fill the unexpired seat on the Parks and Recreation Commission. A resolution of appointment is presented for City Council’s consideration and adoption. If appointed, the appointees will receive their Oath of Office at the City Council Meeting in June, 2016. CONCLUSION: The City Council is requested to adopt proposed Resolution No. 16-5170 confirming appointment of Cynthia Vance with a term of office ending June 30, 2017. FISCAL IMPACT This item does not have an impact on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2015-16 City Budget. ATTACHMENT A. Resolution No. 16-5170
