In recent months, the City has received inquiries from residents regarding the possibility
of purchasing some of these signs to keep as a personal memento. Staff is seeking
authorization from City Council to sell the signs and to establish a sale price for the
signs. Under the City's Purchasing System (TCMC Sections 2-5-9 and 2-5-16), obsolete
supplies and equipment can be sold in the open market without observing a formal
bidding procedure if the estimated value is less than $25,000. The old street signs fall
into this category.
Staff is proposing a sale price of $15 per sign. Staff considers this to be a reasonable
price and is significantly less than the cost of the new street signs. Unsold signs are
taken to a recycling facility, which will pay for the scrap metal by the pound.
CITY STRATEGIC GOALS:
Authorizing the sale of the removed street signs as surplus equipment furthers the
City's Strategic Goals of Public Health and Safety and Quality of Life.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This item does not have an impact on the Fiscal Year 2016-17 City Budget. Money
collected from the sale of the signs is expected to be an insignificant amount. The
money will go into the City's General Fund.
