POSTCARD EXERCISES
“Dear Friend/Family,
It is the year 2040 and you should visit me here in Parkville
because...”
I am not yet in my final resting place in Parkville, and we
have live music and great art and shops and restaurants
in our quaint setting.
We are the greenest community in the nation, we have
free public transportation.
Wow, you can’t believe the riverfront! They have a
beautiful park with water features and a Ferris wheel
as well as this incredible wetland. I know how much
you love nature. The Downtown is historic and its been
updated with fantastic restaurants and shops. Wish you
were here. I love you!
They have some of the most beautiful parks and trails
that you’ll ever see. There are areas of tranquility along
the River and within the metro.
Our historic downtown is joined by the now historic
commons development and there is a very awesome
restaurant on the riverbank along with the other stores.
It has the best parks, has charm and natural beauty. Very
livable. Great golf. Park University.
I am celebrating my 100th birthday. I am proud to
have made it and have been blessed to spend 50 years
watching Parkville become exceptional. Do I have stories
to tell!
Peaceful, safe, relaxing city with plenty to do great
restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and recreation.
We can quickly get to Kansas City to experience all it has
to offer.
This is the nicest little City you have ever seen. We have
an adorable downtown, a redeveloped riverfront with
parks and activities, a lake, great schools, and a quality
of life other areas can only dream of! We have spirit, the
roads are great, and the community is really cohesive
and friendly.
We have a great trail system that we can take our bikes
on as a family. We have amazing restaurants and neat
shops. Its like no other place you’ve ever been!
Parkville is a beautiful wooded small town that has
wonderful shopping and activities available for the
family. Including a path near the riverfront that has Wi-Fi
available.
I’m buried in the cemetery by the 435/45 ballpark.
It is the crown jewel of the KC metro that balances
economic growth with environmental preservation in a
fiscally sound manner with an exceptional quality of life.
We have managed to maintain our small-town character
and lifestyle while be totally modern and welcoming to
everyone.
Our lite rail line takes us right to Downtown KC, airport
and sports stadiums. We have internationally acclaimed
Park University. We have the most incredible riverfront
park, incorporating water, rail, and road transportation
systems. We have a great national distillery with
international awards. We have the most historic /
rejuvenated Downtown with commercial and residential
development. We have the Riverboat museum (Arabia
and Malta).
You need to see the River Park Museum, see the trails
expansion to join Platte City with bikes and zoomers.
Check out the final sports complex and River view
station.
It’s still one of the most beautiful places to spend time
shopping, eating, and walking in the park. You’ll love
taking a Ferris Wheel ride at sunset!

our core objectives as a city.

APPENDIX
The steering committee was encouraged to think about
what they saw as their One Big Dream and One Big Fear
for the community. The responses are listed below.
ONE BIG DREAM
• For us to grow responsibly in every quality way
(GREEN!)
• Always taking care of infrastructure we have to the
highest degree
• Being able to walk or bike safely all-around Parkville
• Riverfront attractions like San Antonio
• Improved traffic flow on FF and Hwy 9
• Extend complete streets concept to all major
corridors
• Parks with Downtown development and improved
transportation system
• Best roads and bridges accommodating increased
traffic and is attractive to business development
• Really rehab the downtown historic area – so it
becomes a major attraction
• A community appealing to all ages, that works for all
ages
• Outdoor wifi, infrastructure for the park to attract
more usage of our park by the people who love their
mobile devices. And it may provide connectivity for
future IOT.
• Citizenry engaged for positive Parkville outcomes
• A Downtown with double the shops supported by
housing while maintaining the small-town ambiance
• Redevelop / repurpose development south of tracks
– good opportunity for residential downtown
• FF Corridor enhancement
• Post office site is underutilized and needs to be
redeveloped
• Sustained friendly charm
• Developing exciting riverfront area
ONE BIG FEAR
• We don’t do what is on the other side of this card (for
us to grow responsibly in every quality way – GREEN!)
and that we annex too much land
• Traffic so congested it takes longer to cross Parkville
than get to the airport
• Lose our charm and quaintness
• Lack of financial support for accomplishing goals
• Losing charm and becoming another concrete beige
suburb
• Overdevelopment and crime
• That we don’t or can’t accommodate growth from an
infrastructure perspective
• We lose control of the growth and the City loses its
identity
• That we get so overgrown we lose our “quaint” feel
and “small-town” charm
• We lose our current culture as a small community
that is fun and friendly
• Balkanization
• Political infighting
• We become too insular in our effort to maintain
small-town feel and a narrow definition of quality
• We turn into 152, west of Liberty
• Strip malls on major routes
• All funding falls through and all dreams crash
Members of the planning team met virtually with
individuals from the community that represented a wide
variety of residents, business owners, school officials and
city leaders.
