SUBJECT: FDOT Pedestrian Signage Test at 9900 Block Pedestrian Crosswalk
The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to share information on a test being
conducted by FDOT regarding the signage at the pedestrian crosswalk located at the 9900
Block of Collins Avenue.
The study involves the use of a concept known as a Pedestrian Gateway Treatment (PGT).
The PGT is a pedestrian crossing configuration that features yield signage, referred to as
R1 -6a signs, located in between each lane of travel prior to approaching the crosswalk.
This effect requires all drivers to drive between two signs. The perceived narrowing of the
road creates a traffic calming effect which helps to increase the rate at which vehicles yield
for pedestrians as well as reduce the frequency of vehicles speeding.
The Request to Experiment (RTE) which FDOT is conducting is being conducted at thirty-
four (34) sites statewide with a minimum of three (3) sites per FDOT District. Bal Harbour
Village was chosen as one of the nine (9) testing sites within our district for this ongoing
study along with a site in the Town of Surfside. The Village will continue to work in
conjunction with FDOT on this effort and have offered to assist with the maintenance of
damaged signs. We will also continue to work with FDOT to fine tune the configuration of
the signage. Additionally, we requested FDOT to consider also testing this signage at the
Frontage Road crosswalks.
