Mayor and Council Members,
Finance Director Erin Barnhart has been working with Mike Brocco to improve the audio-visual
quality of our meetings. Below is an update from Erin on this topic. Staff will add this update to the
end of our February 21st Work Session agenda (we can add this to the regular agenda if we do not
have time at the Work Session):
Council Chambers Audio Visual Updates
In speaking with Mike Brocco, it seems the audio-visual quality is diminished when all
microphones are live. To present the best quality, we are being asked to mute our mic when not
using it. We understand this is a hassle and not convenient. It’s also very problematic if the mic
is not turned back on when speaking, because that audio is lost, and the minute taker can’t
transcribe the minutes fully. Accurate record keeping is a priority to staff as is quality audio-
visuals from meetings. Mike informed staff that there are quite a few people who tune in to the
virtual and recorded meetings, more than we assumed and with that we want to make sure we
are producing high quality access. Staff is looking into different microphone options that could
make the mute/unmute transition easier and potentially be closer to the speaker, more
noticeable lights (red when muted and green when on), we are exploring what’s available to
upgrade to for better quality and also be user friendly. It is also helpful if the speaker leans into
the microphone when speaking. We will have name plates at each microphone that read
mute/unmute hopefully to also ease this transition.
