Subject: Surfside Commemorative Concert cdverage July 25, 2021
The purpose of this LTC is to share with you the media coverage results from the
commemorative concert performed by the musicians of the South Florida Symphony
Orchestra on Sunday, July 25, 2021 as part of our Summer Music Festival.
Over 200 people attended the performance and several media outlets were also present to
cover the event. Miami Dade Mayor Daniela Levine Cava, Mayor Charles Burkett, and members
of the Surfside Town Council along with Mayor Gabe Groisman, and members of the Bal
Harbour Village Council were all in attendance.
The South Florida Symphony musicians included a Brass Quintet and String Quartet which
were accompanied by two vocalists who sang in English, Hebrew, Spanish and Latin. As part
of the tribute, all 97 names of the (then identified) deceased were read aloud; the reading of
the names was followed by the release of live butterflies. Residents and guests of the event
expressed their appreciation for the tribute and enjoyment of the performance.
Out of consideration for the collapse of Champlain Tower South, the second performance of
the Summer Music Series which was to be held on Sunday June 27 was cancelled; the July 25
scheduled performance was re -imagined as a larger Commemorative event, after discussions
with Surfside Officials and the South Florida Symphony Orchestra. The final event in the
Summer Music Series will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2021.
