Accessory Apartment Information Session
Monday, October 1st 2:00pm
Brewster COA, 1673 Main St.
Presented by Jill Scalese,
Brewster Housing Coordinator
Can I make an apartment in my home? What are the
Town’s requirements to create an in-law apartment?
Brewster is looking to amend the Accessory Dwelling
Unit Zoning Bylaw. Accessory Dwelling Units, often
called in-law apartments, would provide opportunities
for residents to create and rent apartments either
within or adjacent to their home, or on their property.
These accessory apartments could provide additional
income to the homeowner and also increase the rental
options in Brewster.
The Planning Board has a draft Accessory Dwelling
Unit Bylaw which is expected to be on the Fall Town
Meeting Warrant in December. This information
session will share about the purpose and key concepts
of the proposed bylaw as well as answer questions.
Please call the COA at 508-896-2737 to reserve your
seat for this program.

in their new training room at the station. A tour of the
new fire station will be given after the seminar.

Fiber: Bulking Up
Dietary fiber is known for improving bowel regularity. However, higher dietary fiber intake also improves
cholesterol levels and reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and colon cancer. Recommended daily
intake of fiber for people 50 and older is at least 21 grams for women and 30 grams for men.
Read nutrition fact labels; foods with 2 to 3 grams of fiber per serving are good fiber sources, but more fiber is
even better. Choose breads and cereals with whole wheat or whole grain as the top ingredient.
Make substitutions; swap in whole grains such as brown rice, whole-grain pasta, quinoa or barley for low fiber
options such as white rice or enriched pasta. If a baked good recipe calls for white flour, use half whole-wheat
and half white flour instead.
Add beans; black, kidney, pinto, navy, and other types of beans and lentils
are nutritional and fiber powerhouses. Use them in soups, salads, tortillas
or stir-fries. Try pastas made from beans or other types of legumes.
Keep fruits, vegetables, and nuts handy; many fruits, veggies, greens,
berries and unsalted nuts are great sources of fiber.
Mix it in; a tablespoon or two of chia seeds, ground flaxseed or wheat germ
added to hot or cold cereal, a salad, or baked goods provides a fiber and nutrition boost.
Skip the chips; try unsalted popcorn. If chips are a must, pair whole-grain tortilla chips with salsa or avocado
dip.

Looking for an opportunity to volunteer? We need YOU!
Due to popular demand, we are looking for more drivers to drive seniors to their medical
appointments. Days and hours are flexible! And, we don’t go beyond Hyannis! There’s
even a small mileage reimbursement paid to our drivers monthly. If you’ve got the time, we
can accommodate your schedule! If this sounds like a good fit, or for more information, just
call the Brewster COA at 508-896-2737. We’ll look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sightings from the Poop Deck
“Having somewhere to go is Home, having someone to love is Family, having both is a Blessing.”
Anonymous
My maternal grandfather, Rosario Marinaro, was sponsored by his brother in Rockford, Illinois, as near as I can
tell in the early 1900s, enabling him to come to the U.S. That is where his family was settled and that would be
where he would make his home for my grandmother. That is, until he sent for my grandmother whose siblings
had made their home about one thousand miles east of Rockford in Passaic, New Jersey. It didn’t take grandma
long before she issued her ultimatum: “Mi sto trasferendo a Passaic per essere più vicino ai miei fra-
telli e sto andando con o senza di te.” “I’m moving to Passaic to be nearer to my brothers - and
I’m going with or without you!” Poor grandpa, he never had a chance.
Did I ever tell you that my grandparents were from Sicily? Whenever I would ask grandma where in Sicily she
would say Palermo, since no one ever heard of the hill town she really was from...Cacarella. I never mocked the
name of Cacarella for fear of the “wooden spoon.” For the first five years of my life I spent much of my time with
grandma, so the Italian language was spoken more often than not. Grandpa passed in 1932, before I was born,
and by that time grandma had seven kids to support. It was the depression and she lost the house that my
grandfather built on Gregory Avenue in Passaic. I used to promise that when I grew up I would buy it back for
her - you know how that goes. I cherished the stories she shared with my cousin and I, especially the one where
she said she really didn’t love grandpa even though she did have a total of nine kids with him. When I questioned
how could that be true she would just look at me and wink….and laugh!
That picture above is authentic. It was a gift from grandma to Joan and hangs on a front wall in our home where I
can’t help looking at it everyday. From left to right is my Uncle Ralph (my Godfather, thus my middle name
Ralph), my Uncle Rudy, Uncle Carl, Grandma Maria (nee Giacomarro) Marinaro, the twins Aunt Josephine and
Aunt Angelina sitting on Grandpa Rosario’s lap, my mother Ida and my Aunt Grace, aka, Chichi, because she was
covered with freckles. Aunt Josephine, one of the twins, passed this summer at the age of 95 and in January 2017
we lost my Aunt Angie, so the twins actually closed the book on the Marinaro’s.
My mother passed in 1997 at the age of 84 and strangely enough when she died I found her birth certificate with
the rest of her papers. To me she was always MOM, to the rest of the world she was Ida, but her real name on her
birth certificate read…. Agata. Who knew?
Peter R. Scheffer (“Life is Good!”) - Agata - Go figure!! How could you not know your mother’s name?
