Subject: Movies on the Beach: The Automat - Award -winning Documentary

The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to advise you that on Saturday, February 19, 2022
in partnership with the Miami Jewish Film Festival Organization, the 2022 Audience Award for
Best Documentary Film "The Automat" will be presented as part of our 75th Anniversary Movies
on the Beach series.
The Automat portrays the 100 -year story of the iconic restaurant chain Horn & Hardart, the
inspiration for Starbucks, where generations of Americans ate and drank coffee together at
communal tables. Told from the perspective of former customers entertainer Mel Brooks,
Starbucks founder Howard Schultz, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Secretary of
State Colin Powell, the Horns, the Hardarts, and key employees - the audience will see how the
business rose to its peak success and then be forced to adapt to the new world of fast food.
The documentary will be presented on the Beach near the 96th Street Beach Access. Members
of the Miami Jewish Film Festival will be in attendance to introduce the film to the audience.
The event will begin with introductions at 7:30 pm. Please advise Trip Barrett (305.776.2776) if
