Criminal Investigations Detective Gonzalez prepared a new training curriculum related to Autism awareness for Village Hall staff and general employees. The training course is geared toward helping Village employees interact more effectively with persons on the Autism spectrum. Detective Gonzalez also provided law enforcement focused, Autism instruction to the Basic Law Enforcement Class #375 at the Miami -Dade College School of Justice. The training ensures new police officers are better equipped to communicate and interact with persons on the Autism spectrum. The CID investigated the theft of handbags from an anchor store at the Bal Harbour Shops. Detectives used video footage to create a need -to -identify flyer and distributed the flyer to neighboring jurisdictions in an attempt to identify the subject involved. The CID initiated a background investigation for a potential new police hire. The investigation included criminal background checks, personal reference checks, credit checks, a review of employment histories, and the like. The intensity of the background investigation helps identify qualified candidates to serve as Bal Harbour police officers. Marine Patrol / Beach Safety Officer Details Stops Citations Warnings Arrests Reports AOA Contacts 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Remarks Marine Patrol: Marine, Patrol and Code officers assisted with Beach and Jetty patrols in the absence of the Beach Safety Officer. Additionally, while the Bal Harbour vessel is undergoing repairs, Indian Creek Marine officers have provided marine patrols of our waterways. Bal Harbour marine officers resumed patrols on the BHPD vessel on Thursday, May 19, 2022. Later in the afternoon, the marine officers responded to a vessel in distress call just west of Bal Harbour in Biscayne Bay. The vessel was taking on water and sinking. Indian Creek and Miami -Dade Marine Patrol, along with Miami -Dade Fire Rescue responded to assist the persons on board. No injuries were reported. Beach Safety Officer: The BSO is currently out on paternity leave. 0 5 /1 3 /2 0 2 2 Th e f t 2 2 0 Bal Bay D r i v e Reporter told officers that someone entered into her garage and took an eight-foot ladder. There are no security cameras that would have captured the area of incident. This case has been forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division for further follow-up. 0 5 /1 4 /2 0 2 2 Pl an e Cr ash H au l o v e r Br i d g e While on a traffic enforcement detail, a Bal Harbour officer observed a small airplane northbound over Collins Ave that was rapidly descending. The officer witnessed the airplane attempting to make an emergency landing on the Haulover Bridge. During the landing, the airplane struck a vehicle and ignited into flames. The wreckage shut down Collins Avenue for several hour. Officers assisted with traffic control while Miami-Dade Police, NTSB and FAA conducted their investigation. 0 5 /1 6 /2 0 2 2 D ece ase d Per so n 2 2 8 Bal Bay D r i v e The reporter told officers the decedent had been battling a terminal illness which he succumbed to. The decedent showed no signs of trauma and family members provided officers and the death investigator with the “Do Not Resuscitate” (DNR) order. The family physician released the decedent to the funeral home. 0 5 /1 7 /2 0 2 2 Th e f t 9 7 0 0 Co l l i n s A v en u e PRADA store associates conducted an inventory audit and discovered merchandise missing. A review of store surveillance cameras revealed several males entering the store and removing the merchandise from the display shelf. The Criminal Investigations Division will conduct a follow-up investigation. 0 5 /1 9 /2 0 2 2 D i sab l e d M o t o r Veh i cl e 9 7 0 0 Bl o ck Co l l i n s A v e n u e A school bus experienced mechanical issues and stalled on Collins Avenue leaking engine fluids onto the roadway. The fluids were contained until Public Works personnel responded. A tow company responded and removed the disabled bus. 0 5 /1 9 /2 0 2 2 Tr af f i c I n ci d en t 9 6 St r e e t The 79th Street Causeway Bridge malfunctioned and was immediately closed to all vehicular traffic. As a result, traffic along the Collins Avenue and 96th street corridor was impacted causing traffic delays and congestion. BHPD officers were deployed throughout the corridors to assist with traffic mitigation. 0 5 /1 9 /2 0 2 2 Re co v e r y St o l e n Ve h i cl e 9 6 St r e e t an d By r o n A v e n u e While conducting traffic enforcement along the 96 Street corridor, a Bal Harbour officer ran a tag on a motor scooter which revealed the scooter was reported stolen vehicle. The officer followed the scooter westbound into Bay Harbor Island, while coordinating with other responding officers. The officers conducted a traffic stop and the driver was arrested and transported to jail.
