Subject: School Resource Police Officers t)Ruth K. Broad K-8 Education Center
The purpose of this Letter to Council (LTC) is to provide you with an update regarding the
assignment of School Resource Police Officers at Ruth K. Broad K-8 Education Center for the
2022-2023 school year. This LTC is a follow-up to the August 5, 2022 LTC regarding this item.
Effective with the first day of school at Ruth K. Broad K-8 Education Center on Wednesday,
August 17, 2022, there have been two police officers at the school. One is a School Resource
Police Officer from the Miami -Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) Police Department and the
other is a Police Officer from the Town of Bay Harbor Islands. Both of these Police Officers are
expected to be on the school campus for the entire school year.
As we have done since 2018, Bal Harbour Village, along with the Towns of Bay Harbor Islands
and Surfside will collectively share in funding the costs associated with the Police Officer from
the Town of Bay Harbor Islands. For the 2022-2023 School year, this estimated cost is
approximately $21,000 per city. An item approving this amount will be on the September 13,
2022 Council Agenda. The addition of the second Police Officer is a result of our discussions
over this past summer to have the MDCPS provide an officer on the campus in addition to the
officer which had been collectively funded for and provided by Bal Harbour Village and the
Towns of Bay Harbor Islands and Surfside.
The health, safety and welfare of the children in our community is a priority, and as we have
done in previous years, we will continue to proactively augment services at our local public
school in partnership with our neighboring municipalities and the MDCPS.
