As a quorum was present Mayor Olsen convened the meeting.
II. Discussion - Applicants for Village Manager: Mayor
Olsen explained that the purpose of this meeting was to narrow
the field of applicants from 12 to 3 or 5 applicants, who would
then be slated for interviews. Mr. Blank opened the discussion
by commending the performance of Acting Manager Carole Morris and
adding that she was his number one candidate. Mayor Olsen noted
that the Council had, when dismissing Mrs. Miller, stated a
preference for an experienced manager. Further, he noted that
previous to Mayor Sherman, the Village had never retained a
Finance Officer and suggested that a manager equipped to perform
both tasks would result in substantial savings. Mayor Olsen
reminded those present that no decision is required at this time
- the purpose of this meeting is to narrow the field to 3 or 5
applicants to be interviewed. Following the interviews, Mayor
Olsen suggested that they be submitted to the University of Miami
for testing and background checks. Discussion then returned to
evaluation of the applicants. Mrs. Stern, stated that in view of
the Florida laws, it might be wise to emphasize applicants with
Florida experience. Mr. Taplin countered that an out of state
applicant might bring new ideas to the community. It was agreed
that the Village would provide hotel accommodations for the
applicants but that transportation costs for the interviews would
be their responsibility. After further discussion, a motion was
offered by Mrs. Stern to invite the following five applicants to
interview. This motion was seconded by Mr. Taplin and carried
unanimously (5-0). Those applicants to be invited are: B. Max
Royle; Matthew B. Galligan; Donald E. Lebrun; Carole S.
Morris; William Thomas Powers. Saturday, September 24th was
selected as the date for interviews. Applicants and the Council
1Mr. Taplin arrived following roll call, as discussion of
the applicants commenced.
