HomeMy Public PortalAbout2008-034 Resolution Supporting Application for a Community Growth Options GrantMember Smith introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: CITY OF MEDINA RESOLUTION NO.2008-34 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING APPLICATION FOR A COMMUNITY GROWTH OPTIONS GRANT WHEREAS, Community Growth Options (CGO), a joint project of 1000 Friends of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota's Center for Urban and Regional Affairs and the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, sent notice and requested communities located in select metropolitan counties, with estimated population greater than 600 and less than 12,000, and communities expected to grow between 2008 and 2035, to submit a CGO grant application; and WHEREAS, CGO is a multi -year project funded by the McKnight Foundation to assist small, fast-growing communities with financial and other assistance for community planning, ordinance development and implementation; and WHEREAS, CGO recognizes that many communities have a vision of maintaining their community character, open spaces, and rural lifestyles, while recognizing the importance of supporting and sustaining economic growth and development, all of which contribute to the health, safety, well-being and success of Medina; and WHEREAS, the CGO Grant will provide to selected communities a grant in Year One of up to $40,000 and up to $24,000 in Year Two, and a potential eligibility of additional funding of up to $100,000 (total) over the expected six years of the project, all for the purpose of establishing a long-term framework for community planning, zoning and implementation; and WHEREAS, the City of Medina recognizes the request and need to contribute a portion of our own planning costs and allow city staff to participate with a planning consultant who will provide professional and technical assistance in the planning, preparation and implementation efforts of the CGO Project. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Medina, authorizes, supports and approves the City Planning Director and City Administrator to prepare and submit the CGO Grant, which application was previously submitted to Community Growth Options/1000 Friends of Minnesota on May 15, 2008, and further supports the allocation of city staff and funds to assist in the completion of the proposed CGO Project that benefits Medina, if so chosen by Community Growth Options/1000 Friends of Minnesota.
