HomeMy Public PortalAboutRES-CC-1954 no numberRESOLUTION SUPPORTING APPROPRIATiON OF FEDERAL FUNDS FOR CONSTRUCTION; OF NEW ACCESS ROAD TO THE ARCHES NATIONAL MONUMENT WHEREAS, The Arches Nastional Monument was created by Presidential Order ors April 12, 1929; and whereas said Arches National Monument was enlarged an presidential Order in 1938 to a total of 34,050 acres; AND WHEREAS, since 1929 the State of Utah and the County of Grand has built approxi- mately fifteen and one-half mama of road within the Arches Notional Monument itself at a cast of $16,783.15, and since the construction of the aforementioned roads the Park Service has provided funds to maintain those roods but has failed to make any payment whatsoever for the construction of any road within the Arches National Monument; and Whereas the County of Grand has built and maintained an eight mile approech road to the Arches Nat- ional Monument; and Whereas when the area is in a rainy sermon and in a flood stage sold approach road is impassable and there have been in the past instances where travelers to the Arches National Monument were unable to use said road because of the tack of a usable bridge, and as a cause thereof travelers were stranded On either side e3f sold bridge and further certain movie companies, and the County of Grand, were put to considerable expense in the past due to delay and cast with regard to sold bridge and access road; AND WHEREAS travel to the Arches National Monument has irruneasurably Increased In the past few years and had in 1954 nine thousand three hundred and thirty two cars carry thirty two thousand two hundred and sixty four persons, and the measurable future prospects for travel activity is manyfold more; AND WHEREAS there is on the Park Service Road Priority List a Now entrance road and Bridge with regard to which the priority Is R35-1, bearing an estimated cast of $675,000.00, and this road is all within the Monument itself cad covers some of the most scenic attractions in the Monument) and the proposed road was surveyed and naked in 1950 In preparation for construation) NOW THEREFORE, We the undersigned persons, and the organizations we represent, of Grand County, State of Utah, urge that you use your influence to get this new rood con- structed at the earliest opportunity for the benefit of Moab, Grand County and the State of Utah.
