PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMEN MEMORANDUM DATE: February 6 , 2018 TO: Bryan Cook, City Manager FROM: Cathy Burroughs, Director of Parks and Recreation SUBJECT: UPDATE ON TREE APPEAL AT 6023 OAK AVENUE BACKGROUND: 1. On January 16, 2018, the City Council reviewed the decision of the Parks and Recreation Commission regarding removal of a Coast Live Oak tree at 6023 Oak Avenue . The City Council directed staff to contact the property owner regarding possible relocation of the sidewalk onto private property to allow for adequate vertical clearance . The City Council , on a 4-1 vote, approved removal of the tree at 6023 Oak Avenue if the property owner did not agree to the relocation of the sidewalk. 2. On January 18 , 2018 , the property owner, Louise Gonderman, contacted staff to discuss the situation with the Coast Live Oak tree located in the public right of way at 6023 Oak Avenue . Ms . Gonderman informed staff that she was not willing to relocate the sidewalk onto her private property and requested the tree be removed . ANALYSIS: At the City Council meeting on January 16 , 2018, the City Council conducted a public hearing regarding the removal of a Coast Live Oak tree located 6023 Oak Avenue. The tree was recommended for removal primarily due to hardscape damage and the lack of adequate vertical clearance for pedestrians caused by a large tree branch hanging over the sidewalk. The City Council directed staff to contact the property owner of 6023 Oak Avenue regarding the possibility of relocating a portion of the sidewalk onto what is currently private property. The Council approved removal of the tree at 6023 Oak Avenue if the property owner was not willing to allow the sidewalk to be routed onto private property . Ms .
