HomeMy Public PortalAbout2012-45 Resolution Supporting Lake Minnetonka Comm Commission (LMCC)Member Weir introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: CITY OF MEDINA RESOLUTION NO. 2012-45 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE LAKE MINNETONKA COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (LMCC) IN ITS EFFORTS TO EXTEND FIBER OPTIC CABLE TO MEDINA BUSINESSES/RESIDENCES NEAR THE HIGHWAY 55 CORRIDOR AND LOWER THE HOMES PER MILE THRESHOLD IN THE AGREEMENT WITH MEDIACOM TO ENABLE CITY- WIDE ACCESS TO BROADBAND SERVICES WHEREAS, The City is a member of the Lake Minnetonka Communications Commission, a Minnesota Joint Powers Association; WHEREAS, the City recognizes the public and private benefits of having high- speed fiber optic communications available to every residence, business and public facility in Medina; WHEREAS, the City recognizes the need for high-speed fiber communications based on 81 % of respondents to the September 2006 Medina Citizen Survey requesting high-speed internet service; WHEREAS, the City wishes to support the LMCC in its franchise renewal negotiations with Mediacom; WHEREAS, the City wishes to emphasize to the LMCC the pressing (urgent) need of Medina to secure high-speed broadband service for its businesses and residents in order to realize its economic development goals; WHEREAS, the City supports the LMCC's efforts to decrease the current 30 homes per mile standard in the franchise agreement to a new standard low enough to provide service throughout Medina; WHEREAS, the City supports the Lake Minnetonka Commission in its efforts to encourage Mediacom to provide infrastructure for a high-speed fiber communications network throughout the Lake Minnetonka Communications Commission member cities' areas; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the City Council that: 1. The City will, upon agreement between the LMCC and Mediacom, fully cooperate, per the City's applicable regulations, with the LMCC in granting right-of-way access necessary for the construction and expansion of the fiber network. 2. The City recognizes and supports that the LMCC will be requesting Mediacom's expansion of the fiber optic system near the Highway 55 Corridor.
