Senior Advisory Council Meeting Minutes March 2, 2011 The meeting was called to order at 12:00 p.m. by Chair, Lorene Reed. The agenda was duly posted as prescribed by the Brown Act. Pledge of Allegiance: Member Barbara Battle Invocation: Member Pamela Taylor Roll Call: Cecilia Amezquita Present: Absent: Barbara Battle Paulette Bradley D. Joyce Edner Lorene Reed Pamela Taylor Recording of Minutes: Chair Lorene Reed — In the last meeting we talked about recording of the minutes and whether or not the minutes should be recorded verbatim. I did have the opportunity to check with the City Clerk's office. There are two methods of recording minutes, an action method and verbatim method. The type we try to encourage in Lynwood is the action method. We try to give you a capsule of what was said, we don't record every word that is said. 1 promised to bring this information back. Activities Report: 1. Black History Fashion Show: Irene Fuentes — It was nice and I enjoyed myself. Ofelia Sanders — I attended all three events and I think they were all very nice. I just think the Fashion Show could have been announced more as well as advertising for models. We could have had a few more people that would have loved to model if they had known that models were needed. The Grand Finale was very nice. The keynote speaker was a little long. I would love to see us use a few more of our seniors for our activities. Maria Ayala — I liked the modeling show, it was very nice. 2. Viejas Casino Trip: Conrad Smith — I had a good time but it would have been better if I had won some money. When is our next casino trip? Chair Lorene Reed — Our next trip will be in ApriL We go every other month. We are checking into Valley View in San Diego, California. 3. Moore House College Concert: Chair Lorene Reed — We received late notice about the concert. We posted the notice as soon as we know about the event. We were given tickets by Margaret Lee Thomas' Office. As soon as we received the notice we put it on the board and we started sign-ups. We tried to get as many people as possible. We did take 35 seniars, we had 47 sign-ups. Please let us know when you can't make it. It was an outstanding concert, the tickets were worth $1 OS dollars and we were given 50 tickets. We sent a thank you letter to the Supervisor's Office for inviting us and they said they love Lynwood. 1 Disbanding of the Senior Advisory Council: Perry Brents — In the last meeting of the Lynwood Senior Advisory Council the Chair talked about the disbanding of the Senior Advisory Council and what would happen next. City Council is in the process of decommissioning several boards and commissions. There has been no action taken and no alternatives put into place. So right now the Senior Advisory Council as it stands stays that way until City Council makes the determination. City council has taken no action and there is no action to be taken at this time. So when any action does come forth I will bring it back to you. So City Council decided they were going to disband commissions and boards, they made feud and that was it, they didn't take any action. The question came from Mr. Conrad, the City Council did not decommission the Senior Advisory Council. So the way the Senior Advisory Council is now, is the way it will be until City Council takes any action. Conrad Smith — Since it's being disbanded, (Perry Brents — It's not) well its going to be (Perry Brents — Right now City Council has not taken any action. City Council looked at proposals for decommissioning commissions and there is no action taken right now.) Conrad Smith — Is there going to be anything that is going to step in place of the Senior Advisory Council (Perry Brents — Yes) Frank Calderon — If not mistaken you just stated that an entity will take over? (Perry Brents — Yes) I thought that everyone that comes in could voice their opinions. I didn't hear anything about an entity. (Perry Brents — Because officially speaking, City Council has taken no action. So because the City Council has taken no action there isn't anything for me to report as an entity that he is referring to as taking over. However if you were at the City Council meeting you would have understood me to say this one thing that the Senior Advisory Council does a lot for the Seniors so there needs to be a replacement. What I stated for that replacement was that we have a thing called the Council of Clubs or the Clubs that meet once a month and that's as far as it went. There are no proposals on the table with City Council for replacing the Senior Advisory Council at this moment. [f the City Council decommissions the Senior Advisory Council for me to say that there is not something in my own mind that I have discussed in those realms would not be true. So when he asked the question, if there is something to fill in. The answer is yes because I would not dare leave you guys out on the lurch like that. Bottom line is that City Council has not taken any action. This board will be in place until such time that City Council takes action and once they take action, I will come back to this body and ask you what you want to do next. I did or we did signup. Only to find out Tuesday there was a meeting and we were not notified. So what method of notification do you use? Marisa Cordova — The committee members will be called a day before to remind you that there will be a meeting coming up. For instance this Monday a staff person or volunteer will be calling everyone on the committee list reminding you the meeting is coming up. Carlton — I would like to correct that Mrs. Calderon, Rozie Carrillo was in the meeting and she stepped out and asked Mr. Calderon if he would like to come into the meeting but he did not come in. They did ask him. Marisa Cordova — We do have a process in place and people are reminded the day before of the meeting or any trips coming up. We do remind you. We will make sure that happens the day befare and remind you. Sylvia Ortiz — I just wonder why some of the people were called for that meeting and the others weren't. Marisa Cordova — I don't know what occurred, everyone on the list was called on Friday. If you weren't called we will make sure you are. People should be called and reminded the day before. That is our usual process that we follow. Frank Calderon — I don't think a day before the meeting is enough time because maybe they have some business matter. Board Orals: Pamela Taylor — I didn't get a chance to attend these events last month. I will try to do a little better this month. Barbara Battle — I did attend all of the Black History events as well as the Moore House College Concert and each was absolutely excellent. I have to agree that the keynote speaker was a little long. Overall I would like to take my hat off to the committee as well as the staff who did an outstanding job. I also would like to applaud the community. Everything that I attended was vey well represented by the community and I think that it says something for the people that put it on. Chair Lorene Reed — Thanks you Mr. Brents for bringing us the information about the Senior Advisory Council because that is new information for me. It's important far us to know and understand what is going on. During those meetings we need to realize that we are all human. There has to be room for mistakes, people make mistakes and when calls are made those are courtesy calls. We all have calendars, we don't always have the staff here to call people. So we need volunteers. We have seniors here that do a lot of talking, a lot of complaining but no one is jumping out to help. You criticize those people who are doing the work and you turn them to the point where they don't want to do it anymore. Someone else has to step up and help. If there is something you feel that is not being done, don't wait to be asked, do it. Come up here and say, "guess what? I know you need to call people", and then go home. It might take you 30 minutes to make those calls. We know the Newsletters need to go out every month and we are limited in staff. There is a group of people that come up here every month ready to fold the newsletters. (Let the record show that Mrs. Bradley arrived at 12:30 p.m.) We are all claiming ownership to this building so lets get on this, let's run, let's come in and do what needs to be done to make sure things are happening. We need volunteers. In other Senior Centers, when you walk in you do see a lot of seniors because they are dedicated to helping and not to just complaining but seeing that things are being done. Think about these meetings and what you want to say. These meetings are important. Everyone in here owns this building, everyone in here has a stake in it. Adjournment: Member Barbara Battle made a motion to adjourn, 2" by Pamela Taylor. By unanimous consent the meeting adjourned at 12:33 p.m. 3
