A Reminder to Patrons of our Medical Rides program
We are pleased to continue to offer our Medical Rides program to seniors of our
community. If you have a visit to a doctor/hospital coming up and need a ride, just
call the Brewster COA 4 Business days ahead (weekends and holidays do not count)
and we will do our best to provide you with one of our friendly volunteers.
The Volunteer Driver will take you to and from your appointment up to the Hyannis
area. We are unable to provide rides to destinations further east on the Cape or
across the bridges. Drivers may be able to accommodate a quick run to a local
pharmacy on the way home, but please refrain from asking them to take you
grocery-shopping or to run other errands.
For your grocery-shopping needs, the Brewster COA provides 2 days of
grocery-shopping on our COA bus. The bus will take you to grocery stores in Orleans
on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All you need to do is call the COA a few days before to
put your name on the rider list. Seating is limited, so we do ask you to plan ahead to
avoid being disappointed.
The COA is also able to accommodate trips to local banks and the Brewster Post
Office as well. Again, please call the COA to let us know you need a ride, and we will
call you back with the day and time available.
Please remember that our Volunteer Drivers are available just for medical rides.
We have wonderful volunteers but our group is not a large one, hence our request
that riders do not ask the Volunteer Driver for anything other than rides to medical
facilities. For more information regarding transportation options, please see page 12
of this newsletter. The COA thanks you for your cooperation!

Calcium and Vitamin D Recommendations
Getting adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D is critical to maintaining good bone health.
I’ve included the recommended daily amounts for these nutrients. Taking nutrients above the
recommended amounts will not provide additional benefits and may carry some risk of harm.
Foods are considered the best source of calcium. The highest amounts of calcium are found in dairy
products, dark-green leafy vegetables, and fortified foods and beverages. However, if you find you’re
unable to get enough calcium through your diet, a calcium supplement may be a good option.
Vitamin D is produced by your skin naturally with exposure to sunlight. It is also found in fatty fish and
fortified foods. Because it is often difficult for people to get adequate amounts of vitamin D for bone
health, ask your doctor if a supplement is recommended. Many calcium supplements also contain
vitamin D.
CALCIUM RECOMMENDATIONS
Women 50 and younger………………..1,000 mg (milligrams) a day
Women 51 and older…………………...1,200 mg a day
Men 70 and younger……………………1,000 mg a day
Men 71 and older……………………….1,200 mg a day
VITAMIN D RECOMMENDATIONS
Men and Women younger than 50…….400-800 IU (international units) a day
Men and Women older than 50………..800-1,000 IU a day

“Everyday is a good day for reminiscing and telling family stories” Anonymous
Welcome to January 2019, and the month I think of as the gloomiest month of any year.
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are in the rear-view mirror now, but did not pass without
enjoying the festivities with family. Thanksgiving was very special in 2018. The three kids came home
on the Tuesday before and left the Sunday after. They decided that they would celebrate our
anniversary, Thanksgiving, birthdays and Christmas during those days and it really turned out as
something very special for all of us.
The three kids all went to the same grammar school and high school back in Clifton, New Jersey and
knew each other’s friends, so when they tell a funny story about something that happened in class on a
given day they could all relate to it. When their spouses are here they can’t quite figure out what was so
funny and can’t appreciate the incident. So the kids have come up with a solution all on their own...once
a year it’s off to mom and dad’s for a few days without their spouses so they can freewheel and not have
to explain every story. I, very selfishly, think it’s a great idea, but until now, have never admitted it
publicly. Our kids get a chance to be little kids again and I once again get the opportunity to discipline
them like the mean ogre I used to be. They still don’t listen!
Thanksgiving was extra-special since they had arranged for two rooms at Wequassett overlooking the
water, and dinner at the Twenty-Eight Atlantic restaurant. Yes, it was very special and very honestly I
can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves for next year. Now you know why I hang around from
year-to-year!
Anyway, Happy New Year to all of you, in spite of the dark dank months ahead, but Spring is just
around the corner and you know what that means here in New England - three more months of
miserable weather. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a healthy 2019.
