Calcium and Vitamin D Recommendations Getting adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D is critical to maintaining good bone health. I’ve included the recommended daily amounts for these nutrients. Taking nutrients above the recommended amounts will not provide additional benefits and may carry some risk of harm. Foods are considered the best source of calcium. The highest amounts of calcium are found in dairy products, dark-green leafy vegetables, and fortified foods and beverages. However, if you find you’re unable to get enough calcium through your diet, a calcium supplement may be a good option. Vitamin D is produced by your skin naturally with exposure to sunlight. It is also found in fatty fish and fortified foods. Because it is often difficult for people to get adequate amounts of vitamin D for bone health, ask your doctor if a supplement is recommended. Many calcium supplements also contain vitamin D. Brewster, MA Sightings from the Poop Deck “Everyday is a good day for reminiscing and telling family stories” Anonymous Welcome to January 2019, and the month I think of as the gloomiest month of any year. Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are in the rear-view mirror now, but did not pass without enjoying the festivities with family. Thanksgiving was very special in 2018. The three kids came home on the Tuesday before and left the Sunday after. They decided that they would celebrate our anniversary, Thanksgiving, birthdays and Christmas during those days and it really turned out as something very special for all of us. The three kids all went to the same grammar school and high school back in Clifton, New Jersey and knew each other’s friends, so when they tell a funny story about something that happened in class on a given day they could all relate to it. When their spouses are here they can’t quite figure out what was so funny and can’t appreciate the incident. So the kids have come up with a solution all on their own...once a year it’s off to mom and dad’s for a few days without their spouses so they can freewheel and not have to explain every story. I, very selfishly, think it’s a great idea, but until now, have never admitted it publicly. Our kids get a chance to be little kids again and I once again get the opportunity to discipline them like the mean ogre I used to be. They still don’t listen! Thanksgiving was extra-special since they had arranged for two rooms at Wequassett overlooking the water, and dinner at the Twenty-Eight Atlantic restaurant. Yes, it was very special and very honestly I can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeves for next year. Now you know why I hang around from year-to-year! Anyway, Happy New Year to all of you, in spite of the dark dank months ahead, but Spring is just around the corner and you know what that means here in New England - three more months of miserable weather. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a healthy 2019. Peter R.
